Worldwide, more than 650 million women alive today were married as children. Every year, at least 12 million girls are married before they reach the age of 18.

 

She is one of the 28 girls that are getting married every minute in the world.  This tunic represents the reality of forced marriage with minors around the world. The front of the dress shows the ornate, colorful wedding dresses used in Asian countries, while the back represents the white wedding gowns typical in the occidental world.

 

The dress is too long, too big for her, a small girl who is forced to wear it. She has to carry a bouquet while she would much rather be holding her teddy bear and school bag. Today is not a happy day, she is losing her childhood, the possibility of education and her freedom. Can you imagine the pain and suffering that this girl has to endure?

 

This is a powerful reminder that forced marriage with minors is a problem that affects girls from all walks of life, and that it is a form of modern slavery that is pervasive in many countries.
