QUIPUBIRD

Sandra Cueva

The symbol that everything is transformed, the Colibrí (hummingbird), shows a path towards Upcycling. Its skin is a sample of the textures, composition and shapes of recycled denim. These make an allegory to the Peruvian pre-Hispanic fabrics, mainly the Quipu, whose knots told part of its millenary history.

The textile industry is part of the Peruvian culture, since the first civilizations. Fabrics were even created to tell their story, through their knots and shapes: The Quipu.

I link an ancient art with a modern material: denim. I create various shapes and textures using recycled denim as a raw material. My intention is to show how giving a new cycle to a material is very polluting in its manufacturing process, creating a sculpture of a hummingbird, a bird that symbolizes transformation, the skin of the sculpture works as a catalogue of various techniques that can be applied in clothing and accessories. wearing recycled denim.
